Studio portrait of 1090 Private (later Sergeant) James Gordon, 3rd Battalion, of Tempe, NSW. Son of James and Eleanor Frances Gordon, of, Erskineville,NSW. A student prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Euripides (A14) on 20 October 1914. He was killed in action on 22 July 1916 at Pozieres, France, aged 21. He was buried where he fell but post war the grave was not found and is remembered with honour on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France.
