Studio portrait of 409 Private William James Laurie, 42nd Battalion, of Cordalba, Qld. Son of James and Mrs P. M. Laurie, brother of 3787 Private (later Lance Corporal) Walter Laurie. A farmer prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Borda (A30) on 5 June 1916. He was killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres, Belgium on 2 August 1917, aged 24. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
