Studio portrait of three soldiers from the 17th Battalion, from left: 2185 Private (Pte) John Stanley Noke, 6525 Pte Leslie Alfred Edward Bell and 2174 Pte Francis William Molony. All men embarked with the 4th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Argyllshire on 30 September 1915. Pte Noke, a moulder from Glebe NSW prior to enlistment, returned to Australia on 31 March 1919. Pte Bell, an iron moulder from Darlington, NSW prior to enlistment, returned to Australia on 7 February 1919. Pte Molony, an iron moulder from Albury NSW prior to enlistment, was killed in action, aged 26, and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. His brother 2175 Pte Harold Armour Molony, also of the 17th Battalion, was later killed in action in France.
