Hat badge: 9th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles)
Bi-metal hat badge of the 9th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Victorian mounted Rifles). The badge shows a brass kangaroo standing right but looking back, within a white metal wreath of wattle. Beneath its feet is a small white metal scroll bearing embossed words 'PRO GLORIA V.M.R.'. A separately attached brass scroll at the reads '9T.H. AUS. LT. HORSE REGT.'.
Members of the 9th Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles) wore slouch hat badges like these c 1900-1912. Smaller, opposing badges of the same design were worn on each side of the uniform collar. A second pattern of similar badges was also worn by the regiment, in white metal only. On the slouch hat badge the wreath was of more open design, the kangaroo's paws were extended and its ears did not reach the top of the wreath. Different badges showing the kangaroo without the wreath were worn on the peaked cap and collar in this second pattern.
