Namibian election badge : Sapper D Lesicnik, 17 Construction Squadron, UNTAG
Circular blue badge with the words 'UNTAG NAMIBIA YOUR VOTE IS SECRET FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS'. There is a pin fastening on the reverse.
Collected by Sapper David Lesicnik, 17 Construction Squadron, during his service in Namibia with the second Australian contingent to the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG) in 1989. UNTAG supervised the return of refugees and the holding of a general election. They also oversaw the withdrawal of South African forces and Namibia's transition to independence. Lesicnik enlisted in the Australian Army in 1981. In Namibia he served with 9 Troop, a trade troop made up of plumbers, electricians, carpenters and bricklayers. His work included monitoring the election, as well as construction work such as building a school for the local children. Lesicnik was discharged in 1992.
