Description

Three Vietnamese civilians traveling by horse and cart from Xuyen Moc in Phuoc Tuy province, are passing through an Australian checkpoint during Operation Portsea. Identified (right) are 17881 Private Ross Edward Smith, A Company, 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), and his South Vietnamese interpreter, Dong, who is armed with a .30 calibre M1 carbine. Pte Smith is armed with a 5.56 mm M16A1 automatic rifle, and he served in South Vietnam with 6RAR from June 1966 to June 1967.
