Studio portrait of three Australian soldiers, including 2139 Private (Pte) Albert Victor Bretherton (seated); 2240 Pte Lionel John Sheridan (left) and 2153 Pte Ronald Crank (right), all of the 53rd Battalion. A barman of Darlinghurst, NSW, prior to enlistment, Pte Bretherton, along with Pte Sheridan and Pte Crank, embarked with the 4th Reinforcements on HMAT Vestalia (A44) on 11 July 1916. Both Pte Bretherton and Sheridan later transferred to the 19th Battalion. Pte Bretherton died of wounds on 9 October 1918. He was awarded the Military Medal posthumously in January 1919. Pte Sheridan, a labourer from Berrima, NSW, prior to enlistment, died of wounds in France on 15 May 1918. Pte Crank, a farmer from Exeter, NSW, prior to enlistment, was recommended for the Victoria Cross for his gallantry and devotion to duty in late September 1918 at Perrone, France. He was awarded the Distinguised Conduct Medal (DCM) in October 1918. Pte Crank survived the war and returned to Australia on 17 November 1919.
