Description
Small square beige rayon handkerchief, with edge painted in white and a painted stencilled design of the Rising Sun badge, with 'AIF' title, in one corner, in red and blue.
History / Summary
Related to the service of VX54644 Sapper Phillips John Arthur Shea, 2/16 Field Company. Born at Numurkah, Victoria on 19 September 1904, Shea enlisted in 3 May 1941 and served until his discharge on 18 June 1942. He sent these two handkerchiefs to his wife, Renie, whilst serving in the Middle East. The method of painting a fine border on handkerchiefs is typical of the Palestine home souvenir industry of the period.
