Barling's make smoking pipe, 'Anzac 1915'
Description
Carved briar pipe with a round shank with silver fitment and tapered 1/4 bent Ebonite stem. The bowl of the pipe is engraved 'ANZAC 1915' on the front. The pipe is stamped 'BARLING'S MAKE' on the left hand side of the shank. The silver fitment bears hallmarks on the left hand side for 1911 and is also marked with the Barling guild stamp 'E.B. W.B.'.
History / Summary
The hallmarks on the silver fitment indicate the pipe was made in 1911 in London by Barling, an English pipe company. The history of the pipe is unknown, but it appears to have been engraved as a souvenir of the Gallipoli campaign, and may even have been used by a soldier or sailor at Gallipoli.
