Description

Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Royston Oliver Carr "Roccy" Matthews, 2 Squadron Australian Flying Corps. Lt Matthews, a wireless operator from Jamestown, SA prior to enlistment, embarked with the rank of Sapper with the 1st Signals Troop, 1st Light Horse Regiment from Melbourne on HMAT Karroo on 20 October 1914. After being evacuated from Gallipoli with illness he was promoted to Sergeant and after transferring to the Australian Flying Corps as a wireless operator, received his commission. He returned to Australia on 6 May 1919. His brother Lt Walter Fenwick Matthews was killed in action in France on 27 May 1917.
