Description

Pre war portrait of Battery Sergeant (Sgt) Walter Fenwick Matthews, Australian Field Artillery (Militia) overseeing three new recruits collecting kit at an unidentified camp. A clerk from Jamestown SA, Sgt Matthews later enlisted in the AIF and embarked as the Quarter-Master Sergeant with the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade Ammunition Column from Adelaide on HMAT Medic on 20 October 1914. Later commissioned as a Lieutenant, he served with a number of Artillery units before being posted to 13th Field Artillery Brigade. He was killed in action on 27 May 1917, aged 30, and was buried in the Bancourt British Cemetery, France.
