Studio portrait of 5404 Private Thomas James Lawler, 1st Battalion, of Taralga, NSW. A labourer at time of enlistment, he embarked with the 17th Reinforcements on HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 14 April 1916. He later transferred to the 53rd Battalion. He died, of wounds received in action, at the 1st Casualty Clearing Station, France, on 23 July 1916.
