Description

Japanese tank crewman's lighweight tropical protective helmet. The helmet shell is made of compressed fibre, and has a fitted cotton canvas cover which has been painted olive green. A five pointed yellow star has been stencilled on the front. There are four ventilation holes around the crown, one of which is missing its metal reinforcing eyelet. Inside the helmet is a white canvas lining cloth and a brown leather headband, attached to the shell by four rivets. The supporting liner is made from four khaki webbing straps, joined by a loop of cotton twine at the crown. A chinstrap made of green cotton tape passes through holes above the ears, and also retains the quilted khaki cotton external neck flap. A captive buckle on the left hand side of the flap allows the chinstrap length to be adjusted as required. There are some indecipherable markings stamped on the liner.
