Description

An air-to-air photograph of a 35 Squadron Caribou flying in tight formation with another 35 Squadron Caribou seen through the rear cargo door. This is one of a series of stills recording the visit to Vietnam of the Commonwealth Film Unit team of Malcolm Smith, director, Raeburn Trindall, cinematographer and Howard Spry, sound recordist, in early October 1968 to shoot footage to be used in productions for the RAAF Golden Years 50th anniversary celebrations. Raeburn Trindall with his 35mm Arriflex camera set up on a tripod in the cargo compartment of a 35 Squadron Caribou (A4-159) filming another 35 Squadron Caribou (A4-173), flying in tight formation, framed in the rear cargo door. The pilot of A4-159, Jake Jacobsen later wrote, "I remember the photo shoot pretty well...I was flying 159 as lead aircraft with Maurie Lewis in the other seat and Alan Fraser down the back with the photographer. The crew in the photograph coming up in line astern is Bruce Byron (brown helmet) in the left hand seat, Graeme Szczecinski in the RHS and Barry Gracie down the back. A4-173 had done the 003 Mission earlier in the day. A4-179 was on the the 006 Mission that day and they would not have got back to base until late afternoon.’
