Related to the First World War service of Albert Ernest Gribble. Gribble was born at Glen Innes, NSW where he lived and worked as a farmer until February 1902, when he enlisted in the Commonwealth Contingent for service in South Africa. Gribble served with 3 Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse (NSW) until the end of the Australian Contingent's involvement in the conflict. He returned to Australia, where he married and pursued a career a as fireman. In January 1917, Gribble enlisted for service for the First World War, and embarked for overseas with 6 Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company, AIF were he served with the rank of sapper until the end of hostilities, upon when he returned to Australia in July 1919.
