Pte Kenneth Saxby studied Engineering at Sydney University for one term before enlisting at the age of 18, having served three years in the Sydney University Scouts and one year in the Citizen Forces. A pacificst by principle, he transferred to the 3rd Battalion in January 1917 to be a stretcher bearer where he would save more lives. Pte Kenneth Saxby was killed in action on the 20 September 1917 at Menin Road, and is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery in Belgium. Pte Eric Saxby, brother to Kenneth Saxby, was awarded the DCM for digging out several men buried by German artillery and continually working under enemy fire at Pozieres on 24 July 1916 . Snashall was killed in action near Zillebeke, Belgium on 18 September 1917 and was posthumously awarded the Military Medal (MM), and is buried at Birr Cross Roads Cemetery, Belgium. Acting Sergeant Sutherland was killed during an attack on Hamburg House near Zonnebeke station on the morning of 10 October 1917, and is buried at Poelcapelle British Cemetery, Belgium. Pte Portus was killed in action in the Noreuill Valley near Arras on the 23 April 1917, and is buried at Vaulx Hill Cemetery.
