Description
Studio portrait of Robert Henry Reynolds dressed in his uniform of Staff Sergeant with the 12th Regiment of Foot. Born in Abergavenny, Wales on 26 January 1834, Reynolds served in the Crimean War in 1854-1855 and was awarded the Crimean medal and Turkish medal with clasp. He immigrated to Sydney in 1855, and served soon after in the New Zealand War with the 1st Battalion, 12th Regiment of Foot. Returning to NSW, he became the Sergeant Instructor of musketry for about 10 years before founding a timber business in the Richmond River vicinity. He died in November 1913. This handcoloured ambrotype is mounted in a classic Union Case. Note that the image is reversed; the tunic should button the other way and sash sit on the right shoulder.
