Description

Outdoor portrait of a group of Allied Prisoners of War (POW) taking refreshements. Postcard was sent to "Miss M E Chomley, Australian Red Cross, 54 Victoria St, London, England" and the handwritten note reads: "10/1/16 Have received parcel containing Boots etc Many thanks R.J. 969 L/Cpl R Johnston, 32nd Australian Inf Squad 16F Depot II Stuttgart, Wurttemberg, Germany." 969 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Robert Johnston, 32nd Battalion, from Victoria Park, Western Australia enlisted at the age of 22 on 12 July 1915 and embarked for overseas on 18 November 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong. His parents were told that he had been killed in action but they later received a post card from him from a POW camp in Germany. He had been wounded and captured at Fleurbaix, France, on 19 July 1916 and was held as a POW until repatriated to England on 19 December 1918. L Cpl Johnston arrived back in Australia on 15 June 1919. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M E Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London.
