Beret badge : Royal Australian Corps of Signals, 1953-60
Bi-metal beret badge of the Royal Australian Corps of Signals. The badge shows a white metal figure of the Roman god, Mercury on a globe, above a brass scroll bearing the motto 'CERTA CITO' (Swift and Sure) and a boomerang with the inscription 'AUSTRALIA'. The badge is surmounted by a detached brass Queen's crown. On the reverse are three attachment lugs, a backing plate and split pin.
The Australian Corps of Signalers was formed on 12 January 1906. In 1912 they merged with the Corps of Australian Engineers. In 1925 the Australian Corps of Signals was formed. In 1948 the Corps was conferred the title 'Royal' by King George VI. The Corps motto, Certa Cito, translated as Swift and Sure, signifies the aim of the signal service - that communications be carried out with maximum speed and certainty.
