Description
The severely damaged chassis of a Chevrolet 1541 at No. 13 Aircraft Repair Depot RAAF, in Breddan, Queensland. Service Vehicle No. 202023 was involved in an accident with Army Vehicle C17069 on the evening of 28 June 1944 on the Burdekin Highway, approximately 6 miles east of Charters Towers. Killed in the accident were 91885 Corporal Thelma Edith McConnell, RAAF 8 Stores Depot (8SD); 99391 ACW Estelle May Scaroni, RAAF 8SD; 2380 Flight Lieutenant Bernard Keith Barty, RAAF Headquarters North Eastern Area and 90550 Sergeant Mary Catherine Wynack, RAAF 8SD. Sixteen other servicemen and women were severely injured. The party may have been returning from a RAAF dance that was held that evening at RAAF Breddan.
