Description

This photograph is from one of 89 nitrate negatives (1 5/8 inch x 2 ½ inch) taken by 5798 Gnr Maurice Charles Thompson in Egypt, Belgium and France. Maurice Charles Thompson enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne on 12 July 1915 and embarked on 11 October 1915 with the 11th Reinforcements to the Australian Field Artillery bound for Egypt. After training in Egypt he embarked in Alexandria on 22 March 1916 arriving in Marseilles on 28 March 1916. In Belgium and France Gnr Thompson served in the 4th Battery, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. On 29 April 1918 he was wounded in action in France and died of his wounds later that day. A T.C. Williams "Welcome Nugget" tobacco tin, with "FILMS" inscribed on front, was found on Gnr Thompson's body containing these 89 negatives, taken with a Kodak Vest Pocket Autographic camera.
