Description
Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) James Stuart Leslie Ross, Australian Flying Corps (AFC). Lt Ross, a navigator and wireless operator, and Lieutenant Roger Douglas MC DCM, AFC (pilot) were the Australian two man crew of the Alliance single engined biplane "The Endeavour" that competed in the Commonwealth sponsored air race from England to Australia. The two Australians departed on 13 November 1919 within a day or so of most of the other competitors but were killed within the hour when their specially designed aircraft spiralled into the ground at suburban Surbiton. The cause of the disaster was never determined but the aircraft was thought to have been damaged during a heavy landing a day or so earlier.
