Description

Poster showing the badges of the RAAF. The poster features 17 different badges belong to the Squadrons of the RAAF, which are presented in four rows. At the top of the poster is the title, white text against a red background, with red kangaroos surrounded in a blue circle on either side. Each badge features a unique symbol with a unique motto. For example, No. 75 Squadron of Butterworth, Malaysia features a Magpie, and bears the motto 'Seek and strike'. The badge for No. 35 Squadron of Richmond, NSW features a rearing horse against a blue circle, with the motto 'Sure'. The RAAF badge or crest features the Imperial Crown, a wedge-tailed eagle and the Latin motto 'Per Ardua Ad Astra'. In 1937 the then Chester Herald, John Heaton-Armstrong, was commissioned to prepare a badge for the RAAF, which was accepted in 1939. Although no detailed record of the translation exists, it is accepted to mean: 'Through Struggle to the Stars'.
