Description
A United Nations helicopter flies over a major tank battle between Israeli Defence Forces and the Egyptian army. The helicopter is a RAAF Iroquois A2-484 and is one of four the RAAF sent to Ismailia for United Nations Emergency Force II. The helicopter has an upturned exhaust diffuser to minimise their infra red signature, thereby making the aircraft a difficult target of infra red guided missiles. This is one of 20 photographs that relate to the service of Wing Commander Hedley Robert Thomas, Officer Commanding 5 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) detachment to the United Nations Emergency Force, Sinai (UNEF II), 1976-1977.
