Description

An RAF Westland Whirlwind helicopter on the helipad at the company base at Gumbang occupied by A Company, 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR) between April and September 1966. This aircraft carries the identification letter G. The garrison at Gumbang relied heavily on helicopter re-supply to sustain their operations however, the helipad at Gumband could only accept light and medium helicopters.This was the most southerly of the 4RAR company positions and was located on a ridge line close to the Sarawak-Kalimantan border and a major Indonesian infiltration route.
