Portrait of Corporal Thomas John Mathews VX36270
Description
Studio portrait of VX36270 Corporal (Cpl) Thomas John Mathews. Mathews worked as a bookmaker before enlisting on the 5 July 1940 at Town Hall Melbourne. He served with the 3rd Division Anti Aircraft, Royal Australian Artillery, and saw overseas service in both Greece and the Middle East. Cpl Mathews was discharged on 20 October 1945. A trench art identity bracelet containing a child's photograph is held in the collection of the Australian War Memorial. The child is William Matthewson, the son of Norman Matthewson, the Bank Manager at Trentham, where Thomas Mathews was employed. Thomas Mathews may have been William's godfather.
