Airborne Flag : Major K Tyrrell, Australian Security Detachment 9 (Baghdad)
The flag has a white hoist on the left hand side with a cord attached at base and top with Inglefield suspension clips, written in black pen is ‘FLOWN WITH PRIDE OVER BAGHDAD BY SECDET IX’. The manufactures tag has been sewn to the top of the hoist and reads ‘ Supplied by / A FLAG WORLD / (02) 9821 4466 / 2/11 PAT DEVLIN CLOSE, CHIPPING NORTON’. The flag is maroon. Central has an image of a parachute cut out of white material and sewn on with blue stitching.
Major Kyle Tyrell was deployed to Iraq in March 2006 as the Officer Commanding Australian Security Detachment 9 – Baghdad (SECDET IX) and was deployed for six months. Airborne flag flown at SECDET compound. This Airborne flag was flown at the SECDET compound Baghdad during Major Tyrrell’s deployment. SECDET IX was responsible for protecting Australian Embassy personnel in Baghdad and contributing to the rehabilitation of Iraq. The SECDET team conducted over 80 operations supporting the Embassy staff in Baghdad’s ‘RED ZONE’. During his tour a number of significant events took place, such as contact with suspected insurgents resulting in one insurgent's death and injuries to others; and a rocket attack on the compound which housed SECDET IX on 14 August 2006 resulting in the injury of four Australian soldiers.
