Description
Friends and family farewell troopship HMAT Kyarra (A55). Over 1000 men from a number of units embarked on this vessel on 3 January 1916. The Kyarra was built in 1903 and sailed fortnightly between Sydney and Fremantle. During the First World War she was used as a troopship and hospital ship and on 26 May 1918 was torpedoed in the English Channel, with nine lives lost. Image from the collection of Major Charles Gehrmann, who served in the Boer War with the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen 1901-1902; with the 9th Australian Infantry Regiment (the Moreton Regiment) 1910-1921, and a Major in AIF camps in Brisbane during the First World War.
