Studio portrait of 418406 Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Alan Harvey McDonald, RAAF, who served with 158 Squadron, RAF. A bank clerk from Alexandra, Vic, Flt Sgt McDonald enlisted with the RAAF in May 1942 and embarked for service in the United Kingdom on 6 March 1943. Attached with the Royal Air Force as an air gunner, Flt Sgt McDonald's plane was brought down at Gross Lobke, near Hannover, Germany, on 22 September 1943. He was killed alongside five other crew members; another crew member was killed when he attempted to abandon the aircraft before it crashed. The remains of Flt Sgt McDonald were buried in the Gross Lobke cemetery; they were later reinterred ain the Hannover-Limmer British Military Cemetery, alongside those of the five other crew members also killed in the crash. He was 19 years old.
