Studio portrait of 1722 Private (Pte) William Joseph Rainbow, 38th Battalion, of Mildura, Vic. A horticulturalist before enlisting on 18 April 1916, he embarked from Melbourne on 26 June 1916 with the 1st Reinforcements. On 9 October 1916 he was taken on strength of the 60th Battalion, taking the service number 1722A and serving in C Company. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 7 April 1917. He was killed in action at Bullecourt on 12 May 1917, at the age of 27.
