Studio portrait of 19690 Leading Aircraftman (LAC), Electrician, Richard Daniell Kendall, 1st Squadron, RAAF, of Nyah West, Vic. A radio installation mechanic in civilian life, LAC Kendall had trained at the Marconi Wireless School, Melbourne. He enlisted on 20 November 1940 and was later taken prisoner of war (POW) of the Japanese. LAC Kendall was selected from a camp in Thailand to be a member of a work party to be transferred to Japan. He was killed when the Japanese prison ship in which he was travelling, the Rakuyo Maru, was sunk by the United States Navy submarine USS Pampanito on 12 September 1944. He was aged 23.
