Description
Portrait of Able Seaman (AB) Reginald Thomas Peterson, HMAS Yarra. AB Peterson enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy on 15 January 1923 and served on several ships, including HMAS Penguin, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Australia. In 1937 he was issued to the newly comissioned HMAS Yarra (II). AB Peterson was killed in action on 4 March 1942 when HMAS Yarra, whilst escorting a convoy in the Indian Ocean, was attacked by the Japanese cruisers Atago, Takao and Maya. The Yarra defended the convoy for an hour and half, but was then sunk with the loss of 138 of her crew. There were only 13 survivors.
