Studio portrait of 6288 Private (Pte) Bertie James Brewer, 27th Battalion, of Wagin, Western Australia. A hall porter before enlisting in October 1916, Pte Brewer left Australia with the 18th Reinforcements in December 1916 and arrived in France for service on the Western Front in June 1917. After transferring to the 50th Battalion in July 1917, Pte Brewer was killed during the battalion's attack on German positions at Villers Bretonneux on 25 April 1918, aged 24. According to his Red Cross Wounded and Missing Bureau file Pte Brewer was buried nearby, however the location of his grave was lost and remains unknown.
