Description
Studio portrait of 436327 Flying Officer (FO) Richard Stewart Bennett, 463 Squadron RAAF, front row centre, and unidentified RAF crew members. A native of Leederville, WA, FO Bennett and his crew were killed in action during an operation over Germany on 21 March 1945. Sixteen aircraft from 463 Squadron had taken part in the operation, leaving RAF Waddington on the night of 20/21 March 1945 to bomb a synthetic oil plant at Bohlen, Germany. Lancaster PB845 was the only aircraft that failed to return. A 1949 report by a Missing Research and Enquiry Team recorded that the aircraft crashed near Trachenau, a village in the target area. The crew were buried in the 1939-1945 War Cemetery, Berlin.
