Portrait of PM2971 Steward (Std) Robert Frank Staff, of Port Melbourne, Vic. Std Staff enlisted on 2 September 1940, and, after training at HMAS Lonsdale and HMAS Cerberus, joined the crew of HMAS Sydney [II] on 1 April 1941. He was killed in action on 20 November 1941, when the Sydney was sunk in the Indian Ocean by the German Auxiliary cruiser Kormoran, with the loss of all on board.
