Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX53301 Anthony Milton 'Tony' Fahey, 8 Divisional Supply Column Mechanical Transport, Second Australian Imperial Force, Malaya, 1941.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one twelve-page letter from Lance Corporal Fahey to Mr and Mrs R T Crago written from Malaya on 18 October 1941. In his letter, he responds to news from home and writes about his experiences of service in Malaya. Some of these experiences include bartering for fruit, buying souvenirs and gifts, finding beauty in many forms, painting, and bartending at a large garden party at the American Consul General’s home in Singapore.

History / Summary

Lance Corporal Anthony Milton Fahey enlisted to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 8 July 1940. He served with 8 Division Supply Column in Malaya, and was captured by the Japanese as a prisoner of war in February 1942. In July 1942, Lance Corporal Fahey was transferred from Changi Prisoner of War Camp, Singapore, to Sandakan Prisoner of War Camp, Borneo. Lance Corporal died of illness on 10 August 1945, while a prisoner on Borneo. He is commemorated at Labuan Memorial, Malaysia.
