Description
Studio portrait of 3969 Private (Pte) Percy Charles Winter, 10th Battalion, of Piccadilly, SA. Employed as a gardener before enlisting in August 1915, Pte Winter left Australia with the 12th Reinforcements in December 1915 and served on the Western Front as a Lewis gunner. Pte Winter was killed at Pozieres, and although initially listed as missing in action, subsequent enquiries by the Red Cross determined that he was killed on or around 13 August 1916 whilst attempting to dislodge a German sniper from the Gibralter Redoubt, either by bullet wound to the head or by severe injuries inflicted by shrapnel. Buried nearby, the location of his grave was lost, and his remains were never recovered.
