Description

Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Wilfrid Oswald Jose, 50th Battalion. Born in Ningpo, China, Jose moved to Australia at the age of eight when his family settled in North Adelaide, SA. A first year engineering student at university when the war broke out, Jose was among the first to enlist, signing up as a private on 19 August 1914. He took part in the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and served on the peninsula throughout the campaign, later obtaining his commission in January 1916. Lt Jose was killed in action at Noreuil, France on 3 April 1917, aged 22.
