Description
Studio portrait of 2562 Private (Pte) Philip Michael Ormsby, 29th Battalion, of Ballangeich, Vic. Engaged and working as a school teacher before enlisting in August 1915, Pte Ormsby left Australia with the 4th Reinforcements in March 1916. He was part of a fatigue party laying cable to battalion headquarters at Flers when he was wounded in the chest by shrapnel from a German artillery shell. He succumbed to his wounds two days later on 2 November 1916, age 24. According to his Roll of Honour circular filled out by his father, Philip was "one of eleven cousins who enlisted, five of whom made the supreme sacrifice".
