Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Joseph Rupert Balfe, 6th Battalion. A medical student of Brunswick, Victoria, prior to enlistment, he embarked as a Second Lieutenant with A Company aboard HMAT Hororata on 19 October 1914. Lt Balfe was killed at the landing on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He was aged 25 years and one month.
