Description
Studio portrait of 3612 Corporal (Cpl) Cecil Alwyn Cheadle, 56th Battalion, of Inverell, NSW. Employed as an accountant before enlisting in July 1917, Cpl Cheadle left Australia with the 10th Reinforcements in October 1917. He was writing a letter to his mother in a reserve-line trench at Sailly-Le-Sec on 21 July 1918, when a German 'whiz-bang' shell landed nearby, wounding him in the neck. He was carried off by stretcher-bearers to a nearby casualty clearing station, but succumbed to his wounds nine hours later, age 24.
