Studio portrait of 2479 Private (Pte) Roger Wodeland Strange, 53rd Battalion, of Warialda. NSW. A British born migrant from Devon, England, Pte Strange was a farmer and engineer before enlisting in February 1916, and left Australia for England with the 4th Reinforcments in September 1916. Arriving in France for service on the Western Front in December 1916, he was transferred to the 14th Machine Gun Company in July 1917 where he was admitted to hospital suffering from neurasthenia in September 1917. Rejoining the unit two weeks later, Pte Strange was killed during the 5th Division's attack on Polygon Wood on 26 September 1917, aged 27. Pte Strange has no known grave.
