Studio portrait of 3337 Trooper (Tpr) Leslie John Abberton, 2nd Australian Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron, of Erskineville, NSW with his sister Mary Ann Clair Smith (nee Abberton). Working as a junior porter before enlisting in February 1917, Tpr Abberton left Australia with the 27th Reinforcements in May 1917 for service in the Middle East. He was wounded in the legs by a Turkish artillery skell when fighting near Jaffra. He succumbed to his wounds, dying at the Australian Hospital at Cairo on 30 November 1917, age 21.
