Studio portrait of 3698 Private (Pte) Robert John Bruce, 14th Battalion, of Essendon, Vic. A driver prior to enlistment, he embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Ceramic (A40) with the 12th Reinforcements on 23 November 1915. Pte Bruce was taken strength and transferred to the 46th Battalion in early February 1916. He returned to Australian on 21 July 1917, having been diagnosed with Pulmonary Tuberculosis; he died on 21 November 1918, aged 32.
