Portrait of 2/3247 Private (Pte) John Handley (Simmo) Simpson of Burwood, NSW. Enlisting in the regular forces in September 1950, Pte Simpson served with the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) in Korea. He was killed on 5 November 1950 during the Chinese attack on the Taeryong River, near Pakchon, when a hand-grenade exploded at the entrance of the weapons-pit he was manning, age 20.
