Description

A 'hot' extraction of an Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) long range reconnainssance patrol by an Iroquois helicopter of No 9 Squadron. The door gunner is ready to return fire from his M60 machine gun if required as the ARVN soldiers run through the wash from the helicopter's rotor blades as the pilot holds the helicopter under full power and hovering just above the ground ready for an immediate exit from the landing zone (LZ). The pilot and captain of the aircraft on this mission was Lieutenant Commander Rowley Alan Waddell-Wood, who was also officer-in-charge of the detachment of RAN pilots who served with No 9 Squadron from February 1968 to March 1969. This is an original print made in Vietnam by RAAF Public Relations photographer Flying Officer Alexander (Alex) Gall.
