Studio portrait of 1097 Sergeant (Sgt) James Charles Gordon Downie, 29th Battalion, of Geelong, Vic. Sgt Downie had been a finisher at the Albion Woollen Mills before he enlisted on 10 July 1915. He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Ascanius on 10 November 1915, as a corporal in D Company. He was promoted to Sergeant on 1 February 1916. He was killed in action at Fromelles on 20 July 1916.
