Portrait of 42252 Corporal Bernard "Bernie" Lyle Smith, 5th Battalion The Royal Australian Regiment (5RAR). Taken during a patrol of the Long Hai hills, this is one of a series taken of the Reconnaissance Platoon by Canadian newspaper correspondent Mr Daryl Henry during Operation Renmark. Corporal Smith was promoted to Sergeant and returned to Vietnam with 5RAR on its second tour. He was accidentally killed during a patrol on 9 March 1969 and is buried at Wallaroo Cemetery, South Australia.
