Front row, from left: Arthur and Ernest. Insert in the top left corner is a portrait of Charles Gregory's wife, Theresa, who died in 1903. Both Ernest and George Gregory enlisted in August 1915, and left Australia with the 7th Reinforcements of the 25th Battalion for service in the Middle East, but were transferred to the Western Front after arriving in Egypt in March 1916. 3305 Private (Pte) Ernest Gregory was wounded in the legs during the 25th Battalion's attack on the feature known as The Windmill at Pozieres on 5 August 1916, and succumbed to his wounds at the 13th General Hospital two days later, age 28. A telegraph linesman before the war, 3091A Pte George Gregory was transferred to the 9th Battalion in March 1916 and was attached to 1st Division Headquarters. In October 1917 he was transferred to the 1st Australian Division Anti-Gas School and returned to Australia in January 1919, but died from the effects of gas on 7 July 1920, age 48.
