Description
Studio portrait of 3881 Private (Pte) Joseph James, 51st Battalion, of Yorkrakine via Tammin, WA. A farmer before enlisting in July 1917, Pte James left Australia with the 11th Reinforcement Group for service on the Western Front in October 1917. After spending just two days with the battalion, Pte James took part in the 13th Brigade's attack on Villers-Bretonneux on the 24 April 1918 and was wounded by German machine-gun fire from Monument Wood. He was heard to have called out "I'm hit", and was seen to have fallen out of the attack to make his way back to receive medical attention. He disappeared without a trace, age 22.
